Seaport City: A Fusion of Art and Functionality

Triangular Stars and Hair Running Cut Define This Award-Winning Shopping Mall

Seaport City, a unique shopping mall designed by Davis Chow, stands out with its innovative design elements and user-friendly facilities. This eight-storey architectural marvel, crowned with a Silver A' Design Award, serves as a trendy art space and a functional environment catering to diverse user needs.

The design inspiration for Seaport City comes from triangular stars, used as a recurring motif throughout the mall to create unity. Overlapping tiles up the wall near the rail in the atrium allow sunlight to seep through, creating a lively atmosphere. The Hair Running Cut design concept is applied to the rectangular aluminum hanging poles at the atrium, constructing a variety of layered shapes for a stylish tone.

Seaport City is more than a chic artistic architecture. It is a functional environment ready to cater to the needs of all users. Humanized facilities include toilets specially designed for the disabled and parents with children, waiting areas outside the toilets, nursery rooms that can accommodate several prams, and ultra avant-garde smoking spaces featuring smoke extraction functions and two-in-one ashtray with washbasin.

The shopping mall is constructed with marble, tiles, metal, and acrylic. It consists of eight storeys and a three-level underground garage. Each storey's convenient passage is decorated with wall paintings echoing respective cultural concepts. The design team took into account the habits of local consumers, data provided by the planning team, and the overall design to make the pedestrian flow line smoother and the design details more humanistic.

Seaport City was a project of cultural integration, involving architects from Japan, engineers from China, and interior designers from Hong Kong. The team faced challenges such as changes in fire regulations over time, requiring adjustments to the design. Despite these challenges, the project was highly praised by consumers and was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019.

Davis Chow aimed to make Seaport City the landmark of Xiaolan, a hangout for locals and consumers in the vicinity. The signature triangular star element, the use of Hair Running Cut, and scattering tiles in the atrium joint add artistic value to the shopping mall. The mall is a testament to the successful fusion of art and functionality, setting a high standard for future shopping mall designs.
